Population estimate increases with 89

January 1^st 2020 there lived 56,081 persons in Greenland. Thus, the population increased by 89 persons during 2019.

In both Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq and Avannaata Kommunia the population estimate rose in 2019. Particularly in Nuuk, where the increase amounted to 342 persons. 32.7 per cent (18,326) of the population now lives in Nuuk. The population count in Kommune Kujalleq and Qeqqata Kommunia is pretty much unchanged.

 

In total the population estimates for the settlements decreased by 154 persons from 7,133 to 6,879.

The figure below shows the development of migration in the period 1993-2019. On average, 392 more people moved from Greenland than to, each year throughout the period. In 2019 a total of 2,310 people immigrated while 2,609 people emigrated. Net emigration in 2019 was therefore 299 persons,  markedly higher than the average annual net emigration since 1993.

The number of foreign citizens has been declining for the past couple of years. In total there now live 1,246 foreign citizens in the country. From the table in our StatBank it can be found that especially more citizens from Philippines (373) and Thailand (208) has come to Greenland to live. In total the population estimate from these 2 countries have increased by 109 during 2019.

 

Based on a preliminary calculation of the number of live births and deaths in 2019 shows the key figures for population trends in 2019 ( summary table 4)
